Auburn Football: My Thoughts on the Coaching Search

All along I have said that I wanted a winner at Auburn. Auburn deserves someone that will demand respect and win football games. Auburn has too much talent not to win. This past season, is a season to forget on many different levels.

The SEC is now the alpha male of college football. What used to be “bottom feeders” are no more. Teams like Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State are now relevant again.

What makes it worse is those teams are also in the SEC West. Along with those teams, Auburn will have to face the “traditional powers” Alabama, LSU, and now Texas A&M every year on their conference schedule.

Right now most people will agree that the coaching search is crazy. There are so many different rumors that are out right now it’s hard decipher which ones are true and which ones are false.

The names that are heard the most are Gus Malzahn, Kirby Smart, and Bobby Petrino. Now if anyone has actually interviewed that is hard to determine because the “search committee” is so tight lipped.

Those names to some people don’t jump right off the page. They think Auburn needs someone that’s established, and I agree to a certain extinct. Auburn is not a place for a coach to come in for a couple of years and then move onto a bigger job.

Over the past week I have seen more Auburn fans down this program. Auburn football is a Top 15 program nationally. Auburn is not a job where coaches come and then move on to a “better” job. Auburn is just as good of job as any other school.

Auburn football is at a point right now that it’s not used to. I can’t remember the last time Auburn went win less in the SEC. With the past recruiting classes that Auburn has brought in there is no excuse not to win.

This is why; this hire is one of the most important hires, in my opinion, in the history of the program. Like I said earlier with the SEC West as tough as it is and the team across the state doing what its doing, Auburn has to hire the best guy for the job.

Whether that is Malzahn, Smart, Petrino, or a name that I haven’t heard of.

All I ask of this hire is that Auburn bring in someone that won’t back down. Auburn needs to bring in someone that will compete in the SEC week in and week out on every level.  That includes recruiting and also graduating players and sending them on to either the NFL or respectful jobs.

They need to bring someone in that will bring intensity to the sidelines. Someone that is not afraid to get mad at a player if they don’t do their assignment on the field and off the field. Auburn needs someone that will demand respect from everyone around them, and demand that the players strive to be perfect in everything they do.

Auburn prides itself on family. That’s what Auburn is, one big family. When players leave and move on to either the NFL or other things, they always come back to football games or other athletic functions. When these former players come back, I want them to be able to see great things.

No matter who the search committee and president Jay Gouge decide to hire I will support him. I just hope that the person they bring in has the same fire inside that us Auburn fans have.
