Auburn Recruiting: Can Tigers Flip Texas Commit Tim Irvin?

facebooktwitterreddit

This weekend is one of the biggest and most important Auburn recruiting weekends in recent memory, and many top targets will be on campus. Texas commit Tim Irvin will be among them. Can the Tigers flip him?

Beginning at midnight Wednesday night/Thursday morning, the recruiting dead period is over. National Signing Day is 21 days away, and college coaching staffs across the country are geared up to finish the marathon that is a full-year recruiting cycle – only to begin again on the 2016 class.

The Auburn recruiting class is coming into focus, and this weekend’s official visits will go a long way towards determining whether or not the Tigers can make a statement and propel the class from outside the nation’s top ten into the top five. With so many five and four-star recruits scheduled to visit January 16, it’s very possible.

There’s Byron Cowart, CeCe Jefferson, Terry Beckner, Jr., Daylon Mack, Preston Williams and Terry Godwin – all consensus five-star standouts, plus a solid collection of other talented players that are considering Auburn University for their college football careers. One of the top rated players in the 2016 recruiting class – receiver Nate Craig-Myers – will be there as well.

And you can add another big name to the list – Miami, Florida defensive back Tim Irvin.

Irvin is committed to the Texas Longhorns, but according to AuburnUndercover.com ($), he will be part of the upcoming Auburn recruiting weekend. And the 5-foot-8, 186-pound playmaker appears to have sincere interest in the Tigers.

In fact, each of the last three 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions – made by Keith Niebuhr, Ryan Bartow and Trey Scott, all see Irvin flipping from Texas to Auburn, despite Irvin committing to Texas less than two weeks ago and Auburn not among final four programs at the time.

The nation’s 20th ranked Athlete in the 247Sports Composite, and the 276th rated player overall, Irvin announced his commitment to the Longhorns at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. However, that decision was made the morning of the announcement, so it’s possible Irvin felt regret soon after.

Since, the Tigers have hired a new secondary coach, Travaris Robinson, with whom Irvin has a great relationship. Robinson has a great reputation as a recruiter – especially in South Florida, and Irvin has expressed an appreciation for Robinson’s recruiting strategy while T-Rob was with the Florida Gators – one of Irvin’s final four prior to his commitment.

“He just says that he wants me,” Irvin said in December. “Other coaches say that they need me, but he just says that he wants me and that I can play as a freshman.”

If Robinson wanted Irvin at Florida, he certainly will at Auburn. The Tigers are losing four senior defensive backs from the SEC’s 13th ranked pass defense, so there will be opportunities for talented newcomers like Irvin to contribute immediately.

Now that Irvin is visiting campus this weekend, the chances of it happening have gotten much, much better.
