Here we discuss Auburn baseball’s series against a talented Lipscomb team, where the Tigers took two out of three to finish the weekend.

The Auburn baseball team won two of three games during its weekend series with Lipscomb University, once again starting strong with starting pitchers Keegan Thompson and Casey Mize but seeing its bullpen struggle later in the series.

The team’s record is now 9-3.

Thompson once again showed why he is one of the country’s best college pitchers with seven shutout innings on Friday in which he gave up only one hit and struck out five. Thompson (3-0) has now started the season with 21 consecutive shutout innings, just short of the Auburn record.

Right fielder Bowen McGuffin, who has played the last two years for Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Florida, went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and one RBI in the 8-0 victory.

Center fielder Jonah Todd also had three hits as the team had 15 hits overall.

In Saturday’s game, Auburn rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to defeat Lipscomb by a 5-4 score.

Mize, a sophomore, pitched six innings in the game, giving up just one earned run and striking out nine. He has now struck out 28 batters in just 16 innings.

Cole Lipscomb, a redshirt senior from Prattville, pitched the last three innings to earn his second win of the season.

Todd, third baseman Josh Anthony and shortstop Luke Jarvis each had two hits for the Tigers in Saturday’s tilt. Todd is now batting .386 on the season, which is second-best on the team.

On Sunday, Auburn failed to hold a 7-6 lead in the ninth inning and lost to Lipscomb 8-7.

Freshman pitcher Davis Daniel continued to struggle, giving up five runs on five hits and two walks in 1.1 innings pitched.

Dylan Ingram hit a three-run homer — the first of his career — in the sixth-run fourth. He also had a double.

Sophomore Daniel Sprinkle, however, walked four in two-thirds of an inning to lose his third game of the season. He’s the only Auburn pitcher with a loss so far this year and has given up 12 runs in 5.2 innings — for an ERA of 19.06 — so far this season.
