Nick Marshall received a late invitation to the Senior Bowl, but C.J. Uzomah was the sixth and final former Auburn football player to be added to the roster. Uzomah received his invitation Friday and it will be the second all-star game for the tight end this month.
Uzomah participated in the Medal of Honor Bowl January 10 and had one 29-yard reception. As a senior for the Tigers, Uzomah had 11 catches for 145 yards and three touchdowns, but was used primarily as a blocker at tight end and H-back.
His diversified skillset (including his past as a quarterback) have made Uzomah an intriguing option for pro scouts – not because he is expected to play anything but tight end as a professional, but because he has shown an ability to process large amounts of information and execute many responsibilities on the field.
As for his pro prospects, Uzomah is likely to be a Day 3 selection, but he has upside and value – he even measured in more than an inch taller than he was listed in college, which is extremely rare.
According to ESPN, Uzomah would fit well with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who just happen to be coaching the Senior Bowl’s South team this week.
“He doesn’t have impressive stats because the tight end isn’t exactly featured in Gus Malzahn’s up-tempo, no-huddle offense, but he has good size and speed. The Jaguars are likely going to add a veteran tight end in free agency and there’s the uncertainty with Marcades Lewis’ contract situation, so the Jaguars could be looking for a young tight end in the later rounds.”
