Auburn football fans think Robby Ashford should win starting job after A-Day

Consider Auburn football fans sold on Oregon transfer and former Hoover High School Buccaneers star QB Robby Ashford.

The first-year Tiger had a spectacular showing during Auburn’s A-Day spring game on Saturday, finishing 12-16 for 132 yards, just five less than starter T.J. Finley, who overthrew deep routes and had fans thinking an actual drive against a non-intrasquad exhibition defense would have been disastrous.

Unlike first-team QB Finley, Ashford and Holden Geriner both made strong cases for themselves in the four-way battle for the starting position. Zach Calzada was on the sidelines and in uniform but didn’t see the field as he continues recovery from a shoulder injury suffered against Auburn football last November in a Texas A&M win when he was the Aggies starter. He will join the battle later this summer.

As for post-A-Day impressions, though, Ashford has the Auburn family won over and is the peoples’ choice for the 2022 Tigers starting QB:

Auburn football HC Bryan Harsin hasn’t decided on the starting QB for 2022

Though Robby Ashford was named the A-Day MVP, the 2022 starting QB still hasn’t been decided on by the coaching staff.

When asked by the media in the post-game scrum whether or not Ashford could be the starter on the Plains in 2022, Harsin was coy:

"“We haven’t named a starter, as far as I know.”"

The QB battle is expected to spill into the fall, and may still be going on when the Tigers host Mercer for the opener. It’s plausible that multiple QBs get a look against FCS competition.

It’s a long way until September, and Fly War Eagle will keep you updated every step of the way with A-Day completed.
