Vanderbilt found a way to win (or at least not to lose) last week against UMass. However, the Commodores are still the worst team in the SEC and don’t appear to be very good at all. New head coach Derek Mason will attempt to build some momentum following his first career victory, but it will be difficult with the South Carolina Gamecocks coming to town.

Head coach Steve Spurrier and company started the season pretty terribly with a 52-28 home loss at against Texas A&M. But, following a less than spectacular 33-23 win over East Carolina (which looks much better now that the Pirates beat Virginia Tech in Blacksburg), the Gamecocks put themselves in control of the SEC East with a 38-35 hard fought victory over the Georgia Bulldogs.

South Carolina is still struggling on defense, and has allowed an average of 36.7 points per game across the first three weeks of the season. A cure for that could be an anemic Vanderbilt offense that did not score an offensive touchdown until the third game of the season. Even the 14.7 points per game the ‘Dores have tallied thus far is inflated because of scores on defense and special teams.

Even though you don’t want to make a habit of going against home underdogs, this game looks like a South Carolina rout.
