After inexplicably losing to Indiana at home seven days earlier, the Tigers rebounded with a huge road 21-20 win in Columbia, South Carolina over the Gamecocks. The win gives Missouri sole possession of first place in the SEC East – every other team already has a loss in league play – and sends Carolina stumbling down the standings.
Russell Hansbrough led the way for Mizzou with three rushing touchdowns. The senior only had 43 yards on ten carries, and Marcus Murphy actually led the team in rushing with 98 yards on 16 attempts, but Hansbrough got the most precious yards of the game when the Tigers needed them the most.
Quarterback Maty Mauk was only 12 of 34 passing and threw for just 132 yards without a touchdown, but he took care of the football and gave his team a chance to win at the end. And they did.
The Tigers will be off next week, which will give them seven extra days to prepare for an October 11 home matchup with Georgia.
