As interesting as the East-West matchups this week are, this one is the most surprising. Three weeks ago, LSU was a top ten team that appeared to be in contention for the SEC West title. Kentucky had lost to Florida and struggled to put Vanderbilt away.

  • Then, the Tigers dropped consecutive games to division opponents Mississippi State and Auburn. However, a bounce back victory on the road over Florida has buoyed hopes in Baton Rouge. Now at 5-2 overall, and even with a 1-2 record in conference play, the Tigers are still very much in the mix because of the cannibalistic nature of the SEC West.

The Wildcats picked up a huge program victory over South Carolina, and after easily defeating ULM, Kentucky is one win away from bowl eligibility. Kentucky – are you ready for this? – actually controls their own destiny to make it to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. It would be the first time the Wildcats would play for the title in the Georgia Dome, and if they win out, they’re in.

SEC East hopes not withstanding, Vegas doesn’t think UK has a shot to beat LSU. Kentucky opened the week as a 13-point underdog, and the public responded by knocking the line down a field goal. I have a little more faith in Kentucky (or perhaps, not much in LSU), and think the right play is to take the Wildcats. They might even win – but I’m too shy to pull the trigger and call for the outright upset.

    LSU 31, Kentucky 28
