Earlier this week, we discussed how Auburn defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson was likely to defend Alabama’s star wide receiver Amari Cooper. Johnson is aggressive, which often leaves his cornerbacks locked up in one-on-one situations with wide receivers.
While Johnson also wants to give the corners help over the top, there will be plenty of times Jonathon Mincy or Jonathan Jones will be on an island with the junior playmaker.

Mincy has had a decent season for the Tigers. He ranks fourth on the team with 58 tackles and eight pass breakups, and also has 5.5 tackles for loss, a sack and an interception. But, like Coleman and Coates, Mincy has been inconsistent at times. For example, last week against Samford, the senior was called for two pass interference penalties and a personal foul when none of the three were necessary.
Because Johnson employs field and boundary cornerbacks instead of left and right corners, Mincy will only be matched up with Cooper when the receiver is aligned to the short side of the field. However, because Jones is the better cover corner and has made bigger plays this season, expect Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin to find ways to force the issue.
To beat the Crimson Tide, the Auburn football team needs a strong performance from the defense, and must neutralize the team’s best offensive weapon. More often than not, Jonathon Mincy will be asked to carry much of that responsibility.
