Like Robinson, Smith is returning to Auburn. Originally a member of the 2013 recruiting class, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Mobile native signed with the Tigers out of high school. Unfortunately, he didn’t immediately qualify and spent the next two years at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
Last season at MGCCC, Smith started at quarterback and threw for 1,566 yards and 18 touchdowns with only two interceptions. He added 424 rushing yards and ran for 10 touchdowns. As a high school senior at McGill-Toolen, he had 1,566 passing yards and 19 TDs in addition to 867 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.
Smith worked hard in junior college to become a better quarterback, and to get back to Auburn.
“Me and my receivers definitely got better with the connections,” Smith said in the summer of 2014. “It showed in the spring game. I got a lot more knowledge of the game now. Studying film helps a lot, and that’s what I’m doing now at Gulf Coast with my head coach at Gulf Coast.”
He is expected to begin spring practice as a quarterback and will compete with expected starter Jeremy Johnson. However, Smith’s athleticism and speed, expected to be in the 4.5-second range in the 40-yard dash, makes him an intriguing option as a future wide receiver.
