Slayton is now the only wide receiver committed to the Tigers, which is a position of need with the loss of senior Quan Bray and junior Sammie Coates’ early declaration for the NFL. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 182 pounds, Slayton has good size and outstanding speed. He’s ranked 15th among receivers and 141st overall in the 247Sports Composite.
Interestingly enough, the Tigers lost out on Slayton earlier in the recruiting process because the coaching staff recruited him as a cornerback instead of a receiver. However, he made an official visit to campus January 23, and was apparently assured he would have a place in the receiving corps.
Tuesday, Slayton’s mother Pamela discussed her son’s upcoming decision with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“We have family history with Auburn,” Pamela said referencing cousin Darrell Crawford, who played for the Tigers in the 1980s, “so that has always been a plus. They initially recruited him on defense, and his heart is really on offense. He wasn’t sure initially about that, but he figured out that his heart was always on offense. He wasn’t sure how he should be recruited, on offense or defense. He finally solidified that — that he wanted to play offense in college, and I think he felt like he could play at Auburn.
“He grew up watching Auburn because we have a family connection. So I think that pull was always there, for that reason. Of course, Auburn has a great program with great coaches. Dameyune Craig is their receivers coach, and he has been very instrumental with just sharing with Darius with the impact he can have at Auburn. It has been a positive experience. It has been a little unnerving, too.”
With Slayton now expected to sign with the Tigers Wednesday, the Tigers have 22 commitments with room for seven more in the 2015 recruiting class. They are now ranked 11th nationally according to 247Sports.
