The top ranked player in the ESPN300 and the top target in the 2015 Auburn recruiting class, Byron Cowart cut his list of potential college programs to two last week: Auburn and Florida.
Over the past 24 hours, there has been a lot of chatter that Cowart has had trouble making a final decision, and though Auburn was trending heavily in recent weeks, the home state Gators were still getting strong consideration late into the morning hours.
Live on ESPNU on National Signing Day, Cowart announced he would sign a national letter of intent to pay for the Tigers. It took about seven hours, but head coach Gus Malzahn confirmed in his afternoon press conference that Cowart’s paperwork was received by the university.
When making his announcement, Cowart wasn’t flashy. He didn’t give a speech or pull any shenanigans. He simply removed his Armwood hat and put an Auburn one on his head.
As we’ve discussed before, Byron Cowart is the most important member of this year’s class. Not only is he a five-star defensive end with the talent to contribute right away, but he’s also a mature young man that talked as much about academics during his recruiting process as he did about football.
Cowart is a special talent that has good quickness off the edge as a pass rusher, solid secondary moves to elude blockers and is strong enough to bull rush when necessary. He is also a very popular player, and there are several highly touted recruits lining up to play with him at the next level – most notably five-star defensive lineman CeCe Jefferson and four-star linebacker Jeffrey Holland.
Jefferson pledged to the Gators on National Signing Day, but Holland has officially signed with Auburn.
Welcome to the Auburn Family, Byron Cowart – WAR EAGLE!
