  • The nephew of Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin, Tim Irvin will be a defensive back at Auburn. The Miami native committed to the Tigers on January 18 after a short stint as a Texas commit, and enrolled later that week.

“He’s an excellent player, no doubt,” Auburn football coach Gus Malzahn said Thursday. “He had a relationship with Coach T-Rob. We think he has the skill set to fit Coach Muschamp’s defense right off the bat. The fact he’s there early will definitely help.”

Irvin’s early arrival is big. With the possible exception of Cox, Irvin has the best chance among early enrollees to contribute immediately. He’ll compete with Tray Matthews and Joshua Holsey for playing time at safety, but should excel on special teams, especially on kickoff and punt coverage and possibly even as a returner.

As you can see, in the video below, Irvin is a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands. He doesn’t have elite speed, but has great instincts and agility that makes him very difficult to tackle.
