10 Best Out-of-Conference Opponents for Future Auburn Football Schedule
By Brian Stultz
No. 10. Penn State
Stadium: Beaver Stadium (107,282)
Best Tradition: Their annual White-Out game
All-Time vs. Auburn: 1-1
Positives:
- Has as much history and tradition as any school out there
- Supposed to be a great tailgating spot with fields surrounding the stadium
- The uniforms are classic
Negatives:
- Have been mediocre the past 10 or so years
- Still rebuilding from NCAA violations as result of the Sandusky case
Twenty years ago, this would have been a great matchup. Recently, though, Penn State has been struggling, and the NCAA sanctions did not help. With that said, Nittany Lion fans still pack Beaver Stadium and makes it into one of the best home field atmospheres in college football.
9. Miami (FL)
Stadium: Sun Life Stadium (74,916)
Best Tradition: The U
All-Time vs. Auburn: 4-7
Positives:
- Great destination for fans
- Playing against Miami IN Miami could help recruiting in South Florida
- A lot of talent that could put it together soon
- Potential payback for somehow being named National Champions over Auburn in 1983
Negatives:
- Their home stadium is a lifeless NFL stadium that is half-full for almost all games. Not exactly a great atmosphere
- In the last 10 years they have been the definition of mediocre
- Would the fan base even travel to Auburn?
Like Penn State, this matchup would have been better even 10 years ago. Now, with Mark Richt at the helm and NCAA sanctions finally over for the ‘Canes, we will see how they respond. Still, a weekend spent on South Beach wouldn’t be so bad, eh?
