10 Best Out-of-Conference Opponents for Future Auburn Football Schedule
By Brian Stultz
6. Florida State
Stadium: Doak Campbell Stadium (82,300)
Best Tradition: Chief Osceola planting the spear
All-time vs. Auburn: 5-13
Positives:
- Strong opponent with past history against Auburn
- Games back in the ’80s were some of the best of the season
- Close for Auburn fans to travel to and vice versa for FSU fans
- Helps recruiting in Florida
- Revenge for 2013 BCS National Title game (yes, still bitter)
Negatives:
- Too familiar, like Clemson
- Hearing the War Chant over and over and over and over and over…
The Tigers and Seminoles produced one of the best BCS National Title games just two years ago, and both look to be national contenders for years to come. As stated, some of the games from the ’80s were epic, and they are close enough for Auburn and FSU fans to make the trip to each respective campus.
5. Oklahoma
Stadium: Memorial Stadium (82,112)
Best Tradition: Sooner Schooner
All-Time vs. Auburn: 1-0
Positives:
- Historic program that reestablished its national prominence under Bob Stoops
- Great home field atmosphere that some call “SEC-like”
- Good fan base that would travel well to Auburn
- Revenge for 2004 BCS travesty
Negatives:
- Would give Bob Stoops a platform for all his “SEC is overrated” agenda before the game and after if OU won
- Their fight song, which is played over and over, has a total of three words. This might just be a negative for me.
I have wanted Auburn football to schedule Oklahoma ever since 2004 when they undeservedly got into the BCS title game ahead of us. Oklahoma has a lot of history and tradition and seems like a fun place to tailgate and attend a game. Plus, the matchup would be top notch.
