2. Nebraska

Stadium: Memorial Stadium (92,000)

Best Tradition: Sea of Red

All-Time vs. Auburn: 3-1

Positives:

  • Great tradition, great fan base and great football atmosphere. Seriously, the nicest fan base I have ever met
  • Maybe the exposure in Nebraska would lead to some corn-fed lineman that Nebraska always has get interested in Auburn football
  • Definitely one of the top stadiums and home field advantages in college football
  • Will have fans flowing into Auburn for their trip to Jordan-Hare. This is a fan base that almost outnumbered Notre Dame fans IN South Bend

Negatives:

  • What has happened to this once dominant program? Ever since Tom Osbourne left in 1998, the Cornhuskers have gone through three coaches and now have their fourth in Mike Riley … from Oregon State. That hire didn’t really make a big splash in Big Red Nation.
  • Seriously, Riley had a total record of 93-80, including 58-63 in conference during his two stints at Oregon State.
  • The blowup Cornhusker mascot gives me nightmares. It is dead in the eyes.

Nebraska, no matter their win-loss record, would be a great opponent. A home-and-home series would be beneficial for both programs, and both fan bases would flock to the respective campuses.

1. Texas

Stadium: Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium (100,119)

Best Tradition: Hook ‘Em

All-Time vs. Auburn: 5-3

Positives:

  • Storied program with a gigantic fan base and tons of money. This game would be a huge hit nationally
  • Playing in Texas, with all of the high school talent there, never hurts when it comes to recruiting
  • Bevo is awesome
  • Austin is a great city and destination for Auburn football fans

Negatives:

  • Not exactly world beaters recently, ending with the firing of legendary coach Mack Brown and the hiring of Charlie Strong
  • Those two different shades of burnt orange would clash
  • Our eagle might attack Bevo
  • Slim chance they schedule a SEC team after the exodus of rival Texas A&M to the SEC.

So, Texas is the number one school I would like to see Auburn football schedule a home-and-home series with in the future. Texas, despite just one national title in the last 45 years, thinks that they are the kings of college football. Sure, they have the most money, but that hasn’t transitioned to success lately. Auburn football can show them who is the boss!
