There were a lot of high points in the 2015 campaign for Auburn baseball as the team finished with a 36-26 overall record, won an SEC Tournament game and won an NCAA Regionals game.

Despite one of the best seasons Auburn baseball has enjoyed in quite some time, after just his second year as head coach Sunny Golloway was fired after an internal investigation of compliance issues within the baseball program.

That led to the return of Butch Thompson to Auburn in order to replace Golloway. Thompson had been with Mississippi State for the past seven years as the assistant coach and associate head coach. He also spent three years at Auburn prior to that as an assistant coach.

This will be his first stint as head coach in Division 1 baseball. He is viewed as one of the best recruiters in the nation, as well as one of the best pitching coaches in the country.

He surrounded himself with a good group of assistants as well by bringing on the 2015 Baseball America and American Baseball Coaches Association National Assistant Coach of the Year in Brad Bohannon. Thompson won that very same award the year before. Bohannon spent the past 12 years with the Kentucky Wildcats helping them become a force in the SEC for baseball.

Thompson will be taking over a team that is on the rise and it will be exciting to see where he can take them. Most of Auburn’s big contributors from a year ago will be returning so this could be a very exciting year for Auburn baseball!
