Awards: Auburn Basketball 2015-2016 Season Superlatives
By Jacob Varner
Best Game: Auburn defeated Kentucky 75-70 on January 16
Auburn had a few good games this season, but I don’t think anyone will disagree with me awarding Auburn’s win over Kentucky as the best game. The win was a huge accomplishment for this year’s team and the program as a whole.
On top of the big win, the game itself was actually really good. Auburn stuck with Kentucky for most of the first half, and then fell behind slightly in the second half only to make a nice comeback towards the end of the game.
Auburn’s win snapped an 18-game losing streak to the Wildcats, and was the first win for the Tigers since 2000.
Yes, Kentucky was having a “down year” by their terms, but the team still managed to win both the SEC regular season title and the SEC Tournament before losing to Indiana in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
While this game takes the cake as the Best Game of the 2015-2016 season, Auburn also got key wins over UAB, New Mexico, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia.
Everyone talks about the wins over UAB and Alabama, but to me, one of the better games of these was the win over New Mexico in the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii. Auburn got a first round win over a solid New Mexico basketball program to put themselves in the winner’s bracket of the tournament.
Bruce Pearl also got his first wins over Tennessee, his former team, and Alabama in Auburn Arena this season.
