Alabama Football Players Getting Off the Hook Comes as No Surprise
The news this week reporting two Alabama football players were released from all charges by a Louisiana district attorney should come as no surprise to college football fans.
I’m not writing this to accuse that Alabama football swapped some money under the table or did anything wrong so that their star offensive lineman Cam Robinson wouldn’t miss any time, but to say that these scenarios are far too common for us to make an uproar about this particular incident.
DA cites insufficient evidence in not prosecuting Bama players
If it weren’t an Alabama football player getting let off the hook this story wouldn’t be getting near the national attention that it’s currently drawing.
Now, I will say that the excuse the district attorney uses in this case is absolutely ridiculous.
The quote that district attorney Jerry Jones gave to KNOE-TV is as follows, “I want to emphasize once again that the main reason I’m doing this is that I refuse to ruin the lives of two young men who have spent their adolescence and teenage years, working and sweating, while we were all in the air conditioning.”
Now this is what really gets my panties in a wad. This society, and my generation in particular, is becoming more and more lenient on the bad decisions that our young people make. And if I hear the excuse one more time that, “well, we all made dumb mistakes at that age,” you’re going to hear me go on a Tammy (from the Paul Finebaum Show if you don’t know) sized rant.
Yes, I made some bad decisions at that age, but I was also held accountable for those bad decisions and forced to pay the consequences. Why should it be any different for this generation?
And then there is this ridiculous quote from Joe D Guerrerio, the lawyer for the two Bama players who were being charged.
As I tweeted from our @FlyWarEagle Twitter account after seeing this message, we’ve come to a point in our society where it’s not a big deal to be riding around with a gun and a small amount of marijuana.
Now while our society wants us to remain as non-judgmental as possible, it’s hard to not to put two-and-two together here and realize that if you’re riding around with a gun and marijuana you’re probably up to no good.
Even if the gun and marijuana belonged to the other two guys in the car that didn’t get charged, you have to be smart enough to know not to get in the car with those guys.

As I said, this isn’t just an Alabama football thing. These guys could have been from Auburn, LSU or Ohio State and the result would have been the same. My issue is that we’re not helping these kids grow up if we continue to make them believe the law doesn’t apply to them. There has to be consequences for your actions.
As much as Auburn fans love to hate on Nick Saban and Alabama football, he can really earn some points in my book if he comes down hard on these two players. In my opinion they should at least be suspended for a game for putting themselves and their teammates in this position by being in a situation they shouldn’t have been in to begin with.
Alabama Football: Saban Dealt Punishment While Everyone Else Griped
We have to remember that these are college athletes, and while at college they need to be learning valuable lessons that help them grow as people. Part of being a college football coach is doing exactly that, and being somewhat of a role model and part-time parent for these kids. And if I was found doing what these two Alabama football players were doing, I can promise you my parents would have punished me with full force.

This isn’t an Alabama football thing, this is an issue with our society in general, so make sure you place the blame where it belongs, and that’s right in the mirror.
