No. 1 – 2010 Auburn

The 2010 Auburn football team finished the season a perfect 14-0 and won the BCS National Championship game.

The Cam Newton led offense averaged 41.2 points per game (7th best in nation), while the defense gave up 24.1 points per game (53rd in nation). Their strength of schedule that season ranked ninth best in the country going up against six ranked teams, including three in the top 10.

The 2010 Auburn football team had four games that were decided by three points or less, including a one point win over Alabama in the Iron Bowl.

Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy that season throwing for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more touchdowns. Michael Dyer was the team’s best running back with 1,093 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns, while Onterio McCalebb rushed for 810 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Darvin Adams led the receiving core with 963 yards and 7 touchdowns. Terrell Zachery added 605 yards and 4 touchdowns, while Emory Blake added 8 receiving touchdowns. It would be a shame not to mention that Philip Lutzenkirchen was on that team and had 185 yards receiving and 5 touchdowns.

Defensive lineman Nick Fairly was the leader on defense for the 2010 Auburn football team with 24 tackles for a loss and 11.5 sacks. It wasn’t the best defense Auburn has ever produced, but they played together as a unit and got the job done.

Like the 1983 Auburn football team, this defense didn’t shut anyone out all season, and the closest they came was giving up three points to a 5-7 Louisiana-Monroe team.

Certainly Cam Newton had a lot to do with the success of this team, but there were some other really good aspects to the 2010 Auburn team that helped them win an SEC Championship and National Championship.
