Auburn Football Playoff of Greatest Teams in Tiger History
Auburn Football Playoff Championship
The Auburn Football Playoff Championship comes down to two teams from the past 12 years in Auburn football history. The game – mostly the rules to help the offense – has changed so much that it’s hard for the defense from the 50’s and 80’s to keep up with today’s offenses.

The 2010 Auburn football team was very balanced averaging 214.5 yards through the air and 284.8 yards on the ground. The 2010 defense gave up 259.3 yards per game through the air, and 109.1 yards on the group.
The 2004 Auburn football team passed for 237.4 yards per game and rushed for 183.3 yards per game, while the defense gave up just 173.5 yards through the air and 104.2 yards on the ground per game.
Cam Netwon and the 2010 offense will be shocked early on at how fast and athletic the 2004 defense is with Quentin Groves on his heals the entire time, not allowing him to get outside the pocket.
Meanwhile, Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown will terrorize the 2010 defense, carving them up on the ground and in the air coming out of the back field taking an early 7-0 lead on a Williams rushing touchdown.
Ben Obomanu will catch a 32-yard pass from Jason Campbell in the second quarter to give the 2004 team a 14-0 lead, and then a field goal later in the second quarter will make it 17-0.
Cam eventually gets it going late in the second half and is able to get the offense into field goal range as Wes Byrum makes it a 17-3 game as time expires on the second quarter.
The 2004 team gets the ball out of the half and quickly goes three-and-out as Fairly starts to make some noise in the backfield. Cam seizes on the momentum and quickly takes Auburn down the field and scampers into the endzone from 15 yards out to cut the 2004 Auburn lead to 17-10.
The two teams exchange punts on the next few possessions, but Byrum adds another field goal early in the fourth quarter to make it a 17-13 game.
Carnell Williams finally breaks free again as the 2010 defense gets tired and goes for 28 yards down to the 2010 27 yard line to set up a field goal, taking their lead back out to seven points with just four minutes left in the game.
Newton completes a pass to Darvin Adams at the 45 yard line of the 2010 team with 2:54 left and Auburn takes their final timeout. He then finds Philip Lutzenkirchen near the sideline for 25 more yards, and he gets out of bounds with 1:45 remaining.
On 2-and-4 from the 24 yard line of the 2004 team, Newton drops back and scrambles away but is brought down by Groves for a three yard loss and the clock continues to tick down. Newton spikes the ball with 15 seconds left, facing a 4-and-7 from the 27 yard line.
He drops back, breaks the tackle of Groves and launches a pass towards the back of the endzone, but it’s picked off by Carlos Rogers and downed in the endzone, giving the 2004 Auburn football the championship they rightfully deserve!
