College Football Countdown: Ranking Difficulty of Each Auburn Opponent
12 – Alabama A&M: Level 1
It’s become a tradition now for both Alabama and Auburn to schedule it’s easiest game of the year the week before the Iron Bowl. Since neither are allowed to make that their bye week now, each team just decided to schedule a cupcake that week.
In the past Auburn football has played Samford, Alabama A&M, Samford and Idaho in the week leading up to the Iron Bowl. They’ve won those games by a combined total of 173-64, and 34 of those points came in the Idaho game in 2015.
Last year Alabama A&M only managed to win three games, and went just 3-6 in the SWAC conference. This has to be an easy win for Auburn football in 2016. The last time these two teams played each other was in 2012, and the Tigers won 51-7.
This is by far the easiest game on the Auburn football schedule in 2016, and we can’t afford to let another cupcake like Idaho put up 34 points on our defense. We have to go back to the days when we won these games 51-7 and 31-7.
I am not at all in favor of scheduling FCS opponents, and think it would be more beneficial for Auburn to schedule a bottom-feeder team from a power five group instead, but I can’t blame teams like Alabama and Auburn for wanting to get these easy wins on the schedule with how brutal a typical SEC schedule can be.
