Junior ace Casey Mize was on fire Friday night, not allowing a hit and striking out 13 batters in Auburn’s (14-0) 6-0 series-opening win over Northeastern at Plainsman Park.

D1Baseball.com’s Kendall Rogers called Auburn’s weekend series with Northeastern a “sneaky good series”, citing positive reviews from the Huskies’ offense. Well, Casey Mize was having none of it. The Springville, Alabama native threw smoke all night, striking out a career-best 13 Huskies and allowing only one base runner in Auburn’s 6-0 win.

Mize’s first three innings were perfect, striking out the first three batters he faced. Only three balls were put into play before a throwing error by Will Holland in the 4th inning put the only baserunner on board in the game. After that, every Northeastern batter would be retired in order, giving Auburn their first no-hitter since 2002.

Tiger offense post 12 hits, led by Venter’s four-hit day

Friday’s game was an all-around dominating effort by Auburn. Three Tigers posted multiple hits, led by Brendan Venter, who went 4-for-4 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the 1st inning. Josh Anthony scored the third run in the inning on a one-out double, however, it would go as unearned due to a throwing error by Northeastern.

Auburn scored next in the 4th inning thanks to a pair of doubles by Jay Estes and Eduoard Julien. Estes doubled to left field, scoring Brett Wright, who also reached on a double. Estes would then score just one pitch later when Julien sent his two-bagger to right field, moving Auburn ahead 5-0.

A pair of singles in the 5th inning set up Auburn’s final score. With runners at first and third, Anthony grounded out to Northeastern’s pitcher Brian Christian. With Christian electing to throw Anthony out at first, Venter was able to score from third base, increasing the Tiger lead to 6-0.

Auburn advances to 14-0, the second-best start in program history.
