Auburn Basketball: Dream season ends, but fans are still cheering
The Auburn basketball team saw their dream season end at the hands of the Clemson Tigers, but fans are still excited about what this team accomplished.
Before the 2017-18 season began, Auburn basketball was picked to finish 9th in the conference by the national and SEC media, Bruce Pearl was supposedly a hot seat candidate, and the Tigers were mere afterthoughts when it came to NCAA Tournament talk.
So much for predictions and the media.
Then comes the FBI probe, the ouster of assistant coach Chuck Person, and the eventual loss of two returning starters, forwards Danjel Purifoy and Austin Wiley.
No way the Tigers would be heard from in March after all that…right? Wrong. The Tigers took all the negativity and the obstacles before them and made some history.
After a winning a regular season co-championship, and a quarterfinal appearance in the 2018 SEC Tournament, the media still didn’t want to give Auburn much in the way of credit, despite the SEC being one of the toughest leagues in 2018.
The first round NCAA Tournament win over College of Charleston was a good start, but the Tigers ran into a team on the upswing in Clemson, and ultimately they were overmatched by the Tigers from South Carolina.
It’s safe to say, that a Round of 32 appearance for Auburn was more than most fans could have hoped for, and the support for Auburn basketball has been tremendous, even after the crushing loss.
A dream season may have ended, but the dream for Auburn basketball lives on. Fans are still cheering for this team, even in defeat.
