Auburn football: What to expect Thursday

Here are five things we expect Malzahn and players to address:

1. Jarrett Stidham. The Auburn quarterback has had a busy offseason. He had surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder and recently got engaged to his longtime girlfriend. And oh yeah, you can bet Malzahn is excited about having his 3,000-yard passer back running the offense for a second season.

2. The running back competition. Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way: Malzahn won’t say much about the actual competition. As he often does, he lets it play out on the field and goes with the hot hand. The good thing is Auburn has a lot of talented backs and the expect Malzahn to refer to the RB spot as “competitive” and a “battle.”

3. Road games at Georgia and Alabama. Last season Auburn played three of the playoff teams (including Clemson). Auburn beat Georgia and Alabama in Jordan-Hare Stadium and will go on the road to play both rivals this season.

4. Recruiting. Malzahn has to be thrilled with the way its going and while he can’t discuss the 2019 class that is coming together nicely, he can discuss the skill and speed the 2018 class brings. Plus, the new redshirt rule could open up playing time for some who normally wouldn’t get it.

5. His contract. Malzahn signed a 7-year, $49 million contract. Some Auburn fans weren’t happy after Auburn lost the rematch to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and fell flat in the bowl loss to UCF. Don’t expect Malzahn to say much about it.
