No first-teamers (again)

In July at SEC Media Days, the media did not vote a single Auburn football player on the preseason All-SEC first-team.

Zero.

But that was OK because when the coaches voted, they’d get it right. Certainly the team ranked No. 9 by the AP and No. 10 in the coaches poll before the start of the season has at least one player worthy of first-team recognition.

Apparently not.

The coaches’ All-SEC team features nine Auburn football players, but not any on the first team.

QB Jarrett Stidham, WR Ryan Davis, DL Derrick Brown, LB Deshaun Davis and CB Jamel Dean were named to the second team. OL Marquel Harrell, DE Marlon Davison, DT Dontavius Russell and DB Javaris Davis made the third team.

Malzahn said this week that he doesn’t pay attention to preseason All-SEC teams. He shouldn’t. None of the coaches should. They should be most concerned with having their players perform like All-SEC caliber players instead of being projected to play that way.
