How many freshmen on the depth chart?

You can look at the fact that the Auburn depth chart features 14 players and think one of two things:

  1. Oh no. How is it possible that we have so many unproven players on the cusp of seeing serious playing time? Both safety backups and one backup at corner are freshmen.
  2. Or you can take a deep breath and look closer. Of those 15, two are quarterbacks who are No. 3 and No. 4 on the depth chart and should only see playing time in blowouts. Four are receivers and we expected every one of them to be listed. Two are backup kick returners and another is backup at H-back. None are on the offensive line and only one is on the defensive line and he’s the third or fourth option at the position. As far as the secondary goes, Javaris Davis is the starting nickel, but also can play corner if needed.

So there, nothing to worry about, really. What you should be noticing is that Malzahn and his staff aren’t afraid to put their best talent on the field, no matter the experience level. Auburn has recruited very well and if a player is ready to contribute, let’s see what he can do.

No better time to find out than right off the bat against a Top 10 team, right?
