Punter combo?

As Auburn’s primary punter last season, Aidan Marshall punted 43 times for a 39.3 yards per punt average.

That leaves a good bit to be desired.

But credit Marshall for putting in the offseason work, especially after Auburn signed former Australian rules football player Arryn Siposs at punter. The assumption was that Siposs would arrive on campus, put on cleats and be the starting punter.

That has happened. At least not yet.

Marshall has competed to the point that the coaching staff felt he should get first crack at starting. On Tuesday, Malzahn said that Marshall will be on the field when Auburn has to punt for the first time. He also said you might see Siposs.

“We will see where that goes but we have two quality punters coming out of fall camp,” Malzahn said Tuesday.

What does that mean?

It could mean that Game 1 will be a live audition to see which punter separates himself from the other. It could also mean that there could be something else in store for Siposs, who is a better athlete than your average college punter.

Or maybe we’re overthinking it.

Let’s just hope that it’s not like what they say about having two quarterbacks (that you don’t have one) and that Auburn’s two punters both are capable of turning field position in Auburn’s favor this season.
