Auburn-Alabama State, keys to the game
- Don’t expect a big game from QB Jarrett Stidham. If things go according to play, the Auburn quarterback will be in and out by halftime. Auburn is heavily favored to win this game and this should be an opportunity for the Tigers to play a lot of people and get some of the young players valuable experience.
- Defensive backs Javaris Davis and Jamel Dean are questionable this week. Dean played last week with his hand heavily wrapped. If Auburn can keep him out of this one to advance his recovery, don’t be surprised to see that happen. Davis was injured last week against Washington but returned to the game. Same deal with him: If the Tigers can avoid playing him, or at least limit his snaps, they likely will.
- The Auburn football team did not play well last season against Mercer from the FCS. The Tigers turned the ball over five times and didn’t create breathing room until the fourth quarter in a 24-10 victory. Gus Malzahn and his coaches certainly have reminded the players of that performance. Don’t expect to see anything resembling that game again.
- Alabama State Tuskegee, 26-20, in overtime in its opener last week. QB Darryl Pearson completed 15-of-24 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. Ezra Gray led the ground game with 60 yards on 11 carries and a TD. Tuskegee outgained Alabama State, 482-292.
