7. JaTarvious Whitlow

I think everyone knew that JaTarvious Whitlow was going to get every opportunity to be Auburn’s lead back this season. The redshirt freshman has turned heads since last season with the scout team and during bowl practices.

He’s been Auburn’s best running back. He leads Auburn with 303 rushing yards (75.5 yards per game) and is gaining 5.3 yards per carry. He leads the team with four rushing touchdowns.

Chip Lindsey eased him into the game plan in Week 1. He was the go-to back on the game-winning drive and scored from the 10 on third-and-7 for the go-ahead touchdown. He later picked up a first down on third down to seal the victory.

At the time, Auburn football fans were saying it was time to name him the starter even though he only ran for 28 yards on eight carries.

But he followed up with a 100-yard game against Alabama State and another one against a tough LSU team. He’s chipped away at defenses.

His biggest shortcoming through four games? His longest run is 22 yards. Then again, Auburn has broken off a run longer than 26 yards this season.

If Whitlow is going to be the back to extend Auburn’s streak of consecutive seasons with a 1,000-yard rusher to 11, if have to find more explosive plays. But he’s been a solid back through four games and it’s hopeful that running room will open up as the offensive line improves.
