It’s time to stop freaking out over a preseason ranking that has nothing to do with where a team finishes. These polls do NOT tell the future.

If you were one of the people who blocked me on Twitter for sharing Auburn’s ranking this article is dedicated with love to you.

Seriously folks its not that deep. The USA Today released its 2019 Preseason Coaches Poll for the upcoming football season and social media turned into a scene out of Armageddon. The poll had Auburn ranked at 16. Some people cried the Tigers were overrated, some argued they were underrated, and some just didn’t care.

I don’t trust a ranking made by just college football coaches. Sure they’re knowledgeable, but are they trustworthy? Mike Gundy has a mullet and Kirby Smart has had the same bad haircut for almost 30 years. I can’t trust those guys. Jimbo Fisher’s pretty sketchy and Tom Herman’s barely surviving only because of “ok cool, hook ’em.” Don’t even get me started on Dabo Swinney’s eyebrows.

These coaches have no idea how the season is going to play out. Do you think any of these coaches predicted an Auburn team coming off a 3-9 season to win the SEC and play for a national championship? Absolutely not. Did they predict an Auburn team with a brand new quarterback to defeat the number one team twice? No way. The Tigers are extremely unpredictable and none of these coaches are telling fortunes.

It always seems that the Tigers perform better when they fly under the radar, especially with a schedule as difficult as theirs. Last year’s Tigers came in with great expectations ranked ninth and they finished unranked. It was almost as if the preseason rankings didn’t matter at all and that winning games is all that matters. Fascinating.

I don’t care if Auburn enters the season ranked or unranked just as long as they win. This season Auburn plays six of the top 13 teams and have nowhere to go but up if they can do just that. Only time will tell how good Auburn is so while we all wait for kickoff here is a to-do list to keep us all busy for the time being.
