Auburn Fans Want Change, Not a New Logo

Auburn revealed that they planned on changing the 53 year old logo by making it more symmetrical for digital purposes sparking criticism from fans.

The decision did not sit well with the fanbase and apparently it’s not a logo but a “visual identity system.” Auburn 24/7’s Brandon Marcello was the first to report the news on Thursday that Auburn would be changing its logo. Less than 24 hours later Marcello shared a damage control statement from the university’s communications team. The team’s statement was extremely redundant and came off as a poor attempt to calm down the masses.

I can’t wait for football to start so we can see how this team rides for the visual identity system.

First of all we know exactly what was done to the logo and second, if a “visual identity system” is an image used by a group or organization as a mean’s to be identified then wouldn’t that be a *gasp* logo? It’s easy to see how tweaking the logo to get rid of the small white spaces in between the A and the U would make it easier to print and embroider the logo but this just looks lazy. The new logo doesn’t even lift or work out in any manner really and many fans have said that the new logo even has a dad bod.

If you didn’t feel like you were already being trolled, the new font for the Auburn logo is called “Sabon.”

The school plans on gradually introducing the new logo and using it with the old one simultaneously which would mean that Auburn will be represented with two logos. In the words of Charles Barkley, “that’s so dumb it makes me mad.” If the university ends up adopting the new logo as the primary one then they will have to replace all of the logos on campus and update their uniforms. What makes fans most angry is that this small change will cost the university time and money that could be better spent elsewhere.

I don’t know about you all, but I would rather see updated facilities than fat, little logos on Auburn’s campus. In June a committee came together to meet about the possibility of building a football-only facility. Gus Malzahn attended the meeting after he and his wife Kristi pledged $2 million last fall for the proposed project. The project itself has been discussed and would be expected to cost around $60 million. It would be a necessary upgrade for Auburn football which currently resides at the Auburn Athletic Complex which was constructed in 1989.

Auburn’s current facilities are outdated by modern standards. For context check out the top 10 facilities ranked by 24/7 sports.

Auburn is taking baby steps in the right direction, but changing the logo is definitely not one of them. A petition has began on change.org for Auburn to keep the old logo and it has garnered over 8,000 signatures in two days. I expect to see that number continue to grow.
