Auburn football: Tigers can’t afford to look past Southern Miss
Other than maybe wide receiver, this could be the best position group for Southern Miss. Starting kicker Andrew Stein is one of the better kickers in the conference and connected on 18 of his 22 field goal attempts last season as a freshman.
Punter Zac Everett isn’t perfect but he’s entering his fourth year as the team’s starter at the position and put up a respectable 40.4 yards per punt last season.
However, the crown jewel of the special teams is wide receiver Jaylond Adams who serves as the team’s kick and punt returner. The 5-foot-10 wideout may be small in stature but he makes up for his with explosiveness, speed and shiftiness.
Adams brought a total of three kicks (two kickoffs and one punt) to the house last season and his 30.8 yards per kick return was the best mark in the conference.
Adams is expected to be a First-Team All-Conference player at returner and could very well be one of the best returners in the entire country.
Because of that, it’s probably best if Auburn kicker Anders Carlson uses his powerful leg to kick it out of the endzone and for whoever starts at punter to boot it away from Adams whenever possible.
