The Auburn Football Tigers were ranked 22nd by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee in this NCAA season’s most important rankings to date.

Auburn football tends to find themselves in the College Football Playoff conversation every season, even if it isn’t at the very top of it. That’s what happens when you play in the uber-competitive SEC West and have an annual showdown with the perenially powerful Alabama Crimson Tide.

‘Bama found itself at the top of the rankings by way of a squeaky clean 7-0 record this season. Of course, this is one of the wackier seasons on record, with over 91 games cancelled so far this season…and unfortunately much more likely to come.

Either way, the Auburn Tigers were able to earn the 22nd spot on the College Football Playoff Selection Committee’s first official postseason eligibility rankings. As it stands, it’ll take an uphill climb to get back into the conversation for actually being in the top four teams.

That said, it isn’t an insurmountable obstacle.

This Saturday is the Tigers’ best chance to vault into the top 20, with the annual Iron Bowl rivalry game against the War Eagle’s least favourite college football team: the Crimson Tide.

Following a Thanksgiving weekend showdown with the whole family in town, the Tigers will host the fifth-ranked Texas A&M Aggies at Jordan-Hare stadium. If Gus Malzahn’s squad can run the table–with a cushy makeup game matchup against Mississippi State on December 12th rounding out the schedule–Auburn could be in a much better position when the final rankings are released.
