North Carolina

The UNC Tar Heels are currently the #19th ranked team in the nation, and the War Eagle’s only question is:

How on this universe have they had a better season than Auburn football?

Mack Brown’s squad has lost to two sub-.500 teams in Virgina and Florida State. They are not a top 20 team in the nation, even during a season when the ACC has been able to play games since early September.

Even Keepin’ It Heel (a tough name to type out as I recover from an Achilles tear) editor Zack Pearson sounded shaky in his confidence for the Tarheels in the first CFB Playoff rankings:

"With their 6-2 record, the Tar Heels still earned a spot in the rankings even with losses to Florida State and Virginia, two teams that should finish near the bottom in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. Without those two losses, we could be talking about a Top 10 Tar Heels team. But nonetheless, they are in the Top 25 and right now they will take that. They are even a little higher than what I imagined they would be ranked. The Tar Heels are one of four ACC teams to be ranked in the initial rankings joining No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 3 Clemson and No. 10 Miami in the rankings."

Without the South Carolina loss, perhaps Auburn football would be discussed as a top 15 or even a top 10 team themselves.
