Matthew Hill is leaving the Auburn football program–marking the ninth member of the 2018 class to transfer from the Tigers.

It may seem like the sky is falling for Auburn football right now. Dare I say it wouldn’t be unfair to say that following news that Matthew Hill–a former wide receiver who is now a member of the secondary–is following the lead of eight other members of Gus Malzahn’s 2018 recruiting class by transferring:

"Hill, a four-star wide receiver in the Class of 2018, caught eight passes for 46 yards and ran four times for 36 yards during his first two seasons on the Plains before moving to defensive back prior to this season. He appeared in only three games, most recently Oct. 10 against Arkansas, and did not record any statistics.Hill would become the ninth member of Auburn’s 23-man 2018 signing class to leave the program due to either transfer or dismissal from the team. That group includes each of the four-highest rate signees that year – Hill, four-star quarterback Joey Gatewood, four-star defensive tackle Coynis Miller Jr. and four-star running back Harold Joiner."

Given all of the eligibility issues the Auburn basketball team is going through right now, it is unsettling that the dysfunction is seeping into the football program as well. The issues the two teams are facing aren’t the same, but it isn’t a stretch to say that there are school-wide, and even SEC-wide, issues that are taking away from Auburn’s shine.

The football team is losing yet another talented contributor after seeing Joey Gatewood and Harold Joiner also look for a new role elsewhere. Gatewood is the current third-string signal-caller on the Kentucky Wildcats but has seen sporadic action this season against Georgia, Florida, Missouri, and Tennessee. Joiner appeared in two games for the Tigers this year but did not record a meaningful stat.

The War Eagle wishes Hill the best of luck in his next steps.
