Auburn football’s new head coach is busy adding former Boise State personnel to his coaching staff. Meet Bryan Harsin’s newest hire, Spencer Danielson.
The Auburn football coaching staff is set to be filled out in the coming weeks, and Bryan Harsin has not wasted any time forming his support system ahead of what should be an exciting–if challenging–first season on the Plains.
Yesterday, Harsin made his first hire by bringing in former Boise State strength and conditioning coach Jeff Pitman:
"Boise State Twitter had a fun time with me today about adding a former Broncos coach to new Auburn football coach Bryan Harsin’s support staff.Just not the one that was actually hired. In one of the more unsung hirings that an athletic director makes, Jeff Pitman has become the new strength and conditioning coach of the Tigers."
Today, he followed that up with the hiring of the acting head coach and co-defensive coordinator for the Broncos, Spencer Danielson:
"Spencer Danielson, the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Boise, will be part of Harsin’s staff at Auburn and is expected to arrive into town at some point in the coming days, sources told AL.com.Danielson is currently serving as Boise State’s interim head coach.A Solano Beach, Calif. native, Danielson was a starting linebacker at Azusa Pacific and then began his coaching career at Azusa Pacific before joining the Boise State staff in 2017."
Danielson is a cultural clash on the Plains, having played in Division II’s Azusa, Pacific in California. That said, he should be able to translate his defensive prowess–his Broncos ranked in the top 50 in total defense.
Particularly, his guys were able to hold opposing offenses to under 2,700 yards on the season, a feat that was only accomplished by four other teams that played seven or more games. The MAC’s Buffalo, Iowa, San Diego State, Wisconsin, and THE Ohio State University aka the team standing in the way of another Alabama National Championship is BSU’s company.
Not bad.
This is a strong hire that will give Harsin familiarity and continuity, which should only increase the odds that the 2021 Auburn football season is more successful than last season.
