Auburn football: What rival SEC fans think of Derek Mason hire
Bryan Harsin made one of the most significant moves of his Auburn football tenure when he hired Derek Mason out of Vanderbilt to be his defensive coordinator.
In Bryan Harsin we trust. Auburn football hired their new defensive coordinator Derek Mason on Thursday morning, following up his Spencer Danielson yesterday and Jeff Pitman on Monday.
The Plains will be getting the former head coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores, who just finished up a dreadful 0-9 season in the SEC East:
"Former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason has a new coaching job in college football, as he has been hired by the Auburn Tigers to be the new defensive coordinator under Bryan Harsin, according to AL.com. The news comes shortly after 247Sports reporter Brandon Marcello reported the Tigers were targeting Mason. It becomes the third college coaching job that Mason has landed since returning to the college coaching ranks in 2010."
While they somehow were able to lose by less than a touchdown by Texas A&M to open the season, their next most competitive loss was against the Kentucky Wildcats, a team most certainly not known for their football prowess.
Quite honestly, the most notable thing about Vandy’s season was the decision to have Sarah Fuller become the first female to ever participate in a Division I FBS game. Other than that, a 41-0 beatdown at the hands of the 5-5 Missouri Tigers and a 41-7 loss to the 2-8 South Carolina Gamecocks at home were the highlights of a putrid season.
Through all of the losing Mason went through last season in Nashville, however, many fans around the SEC believe this could be a slam dunk hire by Harsin and the Auburn athletic department:
Ole Miss
Florida
Georgia
Alabama
Time will tell, but unlike Brad Bedell–who was crucified by the Boise State fanbase–Mason is seen as a good hire by fellow SEC fans.
