Good news Auburn football fans: Travis Williams could be retained by Bryan Harsin and remain with the team for his sixth season.

With all of the new Auburn football coaching hires that have been made by Bryan Harsin in his first offseason as the new head coach of the Tigers, it’s easy to forget that certain members of Gus Malzahn’s support staff are getting the ax.

Of course, Kevin Steele deserved it in every way imaginable. Coups don’t work in Auburn or in America, Mr. Steal. Malzahn didn’t deserve having a usurper insubordinate him…but those are the dramas of 2020–and for one day on New Year’s Day, when Steele coached the team to another beatdown by a Top 25 opponent.

Good riddance.

Anyways, not every member of the Tigers coaching staff needs to go the way of those two. Fly War Eagle does not want to see Travis Williams go anywhere.

Many fans pointed out that Williams could shift to the defensive backs, where there is very much still an opening. It does appear that he may have competition in the form of Travaris Robinson…although then again Auburn may have stiff competition for the South Carolina defensive coordinator:

"It’ll be interesting to see if Bryan Harsin could nab such a hot commodity in the coaching market. That would certainly register as a major win to beat out an SEC powerhouse like Florida and a perennial ACC title threat in the University of Miami for the former Tiger."

Hopefully, that is the case. FWE would like to see some continuity.

And it looks like we might:

Mr. Dukes, please be right! Former Tigers always have a soft spot here, and Williams is such a well-respected part of the Auburn community.

Here’s a War Eagle to the idea of Williams staying put on the Plains.
