Auburn football announced this morning that they added another member to the recruiting class of 2021: three-star running back Jarquez Hunter.

The newest signee hails from Philadelphia, MS, and played for Neshoba Central High School. His high school stats are explosive–5,761 career rushing yards and 77 career rushing touchdowns. Hunter will be the fourth running back on scholarship this season and moves Auburn football’s 2021 recruiting class up to the #27 spot.

AL.com points out that Auburn had 17 signees prior to Hunter, and 11 of them were defensive recruits, leaving HC Bryan Harsin with much work to do on the offensive side. The Tigers hadn’t yet signed a running back, and they were in great need of one due to D.J. Williams and Mark-Antony Richards entering the transfer portal.

The coaching staff has managed to increase the depth of the running back position, adding Jarquez Hunter to the ranks along with Tank Bigsby, Shaun Shivers, and Devan Barrett.

Hunter made his decision this morning, choosing Auburn over Mississippi State, Iowa, and several other schools. Auburn Undercover reports Hunter’s reasoning for why he chose the Tigers:

"“Because I know that they produce running backs and I know I’ve got a chance to compete up there and get in games early,” Hunter said. “And they’re just a really good team. I always liked Auburn. I just liked them when Cam (Newton) was there. I’ve always liked them since I was little.”"

Jarquez Hunter was highlighted previously by FWE, and we mentioned that Hunter was recruited by the only coach retained by Bryan Harsin–Cadillac Williams. Auburn Rivals tweeted a video of Hunter’s senior highlights:

Auburn football now officially has 18 signees in the recruiting class of 2021 and the process is still ongoing. For the next recruiting splash, let’s hope that Coach Harsin and the staff are turning their attention to the O-line.
