Coach Bryan Harsin and his staff hit the ground running with recruiting and have been working at it ever since they took over the program from Gus Malzahn. Having already been looking ahead to the class of 2022, the Auburn football program attempted to add another name to the roster and extended an offer to Auburn native Powell Gordon.
Gordon is a rising senior at local Auburn High School, and according to Auburn Undercover was a standout linebacker for the Tigers last season:
"Gordon, listed at 6-feet-3, 215-pounds, helped lead Auburn High to a Class 7A state runner-up finish in 2020. He ended the season with 88 tackles, 14 sacks and around two dozen tackles for loss."
The offer from the Auburn football program brings Gordon’s offer tally to nine schools including fellow SEC schools Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky. He boasts an impressive 3.98 GPA in his Twitter bio, indicating that he is not only a hardworking athlete but also a determined student.
Gordon is being actively recruited by Bryan Harsin, and–though he played defensive end in high school–it seems the Tigers are recruiting him as a middle linebacker. According to Auburn Rivals, it was a dream come true for Gordon to get an offer from Auburn:
"“It felt great,” Gordon said. “Just getting an offer from the school that you’ve liked your whole life, it’s great. And it was special to be on the phone with Coach Harsin. He’s the new coach and really impressed me with all his knowledge of football and everything.”"
Gordon has also spoken with Harsin’s new linebackers coach, Jeff Schmedding. If he ultimately decides on Auburn, Gordon will be joining a linebacker room with the likes of Chandler Wooten, Zakoby McClain, and Owen Pappoe.
Gordon is unsure of when he’ll make his final decision, but he has said that Auburn is high up on his list. With the addition of hometown center Cort Bradley on the team, perhaps Gordon will follow his A-High teammate to Auburn University.
