Auburn women’s basketball: Unique Thompson declares for WNBA Draft
The 2020-21 Auburn women’s basketball season was not an easy one to sit through for Tiger fans anywhere on the map. Going winless in the SEC and losing by double digits against the likes of Houston, Stephen F. Austin, and Belmont by double digits, the lady Tigers endured the worst season of the “Coach Flo” era on the Plains.
The 5-19 season turned out to be the last for head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy, who was dismissed after nine seasons in Auburn. Though several Tiger teams performed admirably under Williams-Flournoy–her squads made the NCAA tournament in 2016, 2017, and 2019–three of the last four seasons were losing ones for Auburn.
It isn’t all doom and gloom in the 334, though. Earlier today, Unique Thompson declared for the WNBA Draft, signifying the end of her Auburn women’s basketball career while proclaiming the continuation of her hoops career at the professional level.
Per her Twitter page:
Of course, as always, the Auburn family came out to her support:
Thompson had an incredible finish to her Auburn career in 2020-21, finishing the SEC tournament loss with a double-double, which was the 58th of her Tigers tenure. She also broke the school rebound record in February with her 1,156th career board.
Now, she takes her game to the professional level, where she could be the ninth Auburn women’s basketball player selected in the history of the WNBA Draft.
A unique career it was, and a unique career it will continue to be for the legendary lady from Theodore, Alabama.
