The man, the myth, the Auburn football legend. Cam Newton.

The leader of the Tigers’ unforgettable 2010 season played in orange and blue for just one year but made an eternal mark on the Auburn campus. Newton was a star on the Plains from the very beginning and became the Tigers’ fourth No. 1 pick in the draft.

In what is quickly turning into a controversial article among fans on Twitter, Fox Sports writer R.J. Young places Cam Newton at the #1 spot on his list of the best college football players of all time:

"Between Nov. 1, 2009, and September 10, 2011, Cam didn’t lose a single game. And there was nothing he couldn’t do on a football field. He fell just 73 total yards shy of a 3,000-yard passing, 1,500-yard rushing season in what is the most remarkable single season in the history of the sport following a remarkable one in JUCO.He accounted for 51 TDs and just seven picks in 2010. He rushed for, passed for and caught a touchdown while recording a tackle that season."

A former teammate of Tim Tebow, Newton spent time in Gainesville and then at Blinn College before joining the Auburn football team, and the rest was history. Newton set the SEC record for rushing yards by a quarterback, and he also broke Pat Sullivan’s school record for most touchdowns in a season.

By the end of the 2010 season, Newton amassed multiple prestigious awards, including the Heisman Trophy and the Walter Camp Award. He became the third Auburn Heisman winner after Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson, who curiously did not make Young’s list of college football greats.

R.J. Young said what he said, and honestly, we’re not mad about it. Whether or not you believe Cam Newton is the best of the best, he is certainly one of the greats and there’s no denying that.
