With all of the narratives you could center on regarding the transfer of former Georgia Bulldog turned Auburn football WR room addition Demetris Robertson, one of the last things you should feature is the legal troubles he is facing.
In an example of either pure malice or an uncomfortable level of saltiness, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution decided to make that the lede in reporting on the Savannah native’s portal move to Auburn.
Chip Towers, an aptly named man with an apparent boulder-sized chip on his shoulders, was the author.
Mr. Towers, bury this lede under 50 pounds of cement and never speak of it again.
The Class of 2016 commit, originally a 5-star who chose the University of California, Berkeley, announced his decision to join the Auburn football program yesterday. He’s perhaps the biggest 2021 offensive addition Bryan Harsin has made since becoming the Tigers head coach.
Instead of focusing on the befuddling decision to go to Cal in the first place or his underperformance in Athens that led to him being the fifth WR on the totem pole last season, the AJC instead went with a headline featuring the word “felony” despite this being the charge:
"The felony charges stem from an incident in early February in which Robertson’s 2017 Dodge Charger was “booted” by UGA Parking officials for illegally parking in an East Campus deck. Robertson is accused of removing the booted tire from his vehicle and then having the wheel clamp removed at a location in Henry County."
The entire piece is a nitpicking a young man’s past, and Towers takes pride in using the Georgia Student-Athlete Handbook to conclude that the transfer–who, you know, won’t be playing for the Bulldogs in 2021–wouldn’t be able to take the field for UGA this fall anyway.
Here’s to Robertson having the game of his life October 9th when Jordan-Hare Stadium hosts the Dawgs.
