Powell Gordon, a 3-star LB from Auburn HS, had a monster junior season tallying 88 tackles, 32 TFL, and 14 sacks and established himself as one of the best defensive players in the state of Alabama.  Gordon became the second Auburn football commitment in the 2022 class for Bryan Harsin when he gave his pledge in February, and has taken on a leadership role in the class.

He spoke with Fly War Eagle about the road ahead in his senior year of high school and what his future on the Plains will hold:

Jonathan Shanks: What has the offseason been like for you heading into your senior season? Obviously you’ve ended your recruitment so has that allowed you to focus more on your preparation?

Powell Gordon: The off-season has been good, I’ve built a relationship with my coaches at the next level but have also been mostly focused on my final year in high school. Committing has allowed for me to focus on this year.

JS: You are teammates with Drew Bobo and Eston Harris who are also big Auburn targets. Who are some other guys you’ve connected with and are working on to try to get them to join you at Auburn?

PG: I’ve been recruiting Drew and EJ and good bit and also have recruited anyone who has shown interest in Auburn.

JS: Talk about the Auburn football offer. I know it was a dream offer for you, but walk everyone through what receiving that offer and being able to join the class meant to you as a local product.

PG: The Auburn offer was huge, they had talked to me for a good bit before and I was just waiting on the offer any day.

JS: Being around the program now from the inside is there anything that stands out about the new staff’s approach in recruiting?

PG: I think the new staff looks for guys that’ll fit their system and people they can develop. They also are honest in their recruiting and tell you what to expect at Auburn.

JS: From the outside looking in it seems like there is a different energy around the program, and it is something a lot of us have struggled to put our finger on. Now that you have gotten to be around those guys who are already in the program, does it feel the same way when you’re around the team and this new staff?

PG: Yes, it does the energy is great and they expect to be great every single day.

We also put Powell on the spot and asked him about his prediction for the 2021 Auburn Tigers. He believes the pundits may be in for a surprise given their meager trajectory for the team this coming season:

"“I predict Auburn to shock a lot of people this year. Not only do they have great talent, but also a great staff.”"

If you are in the Auburn area, or are traveling to The Plains for football season, come a day early and catch a game at Auburn High School. When we talk about the “fit” in Bryan Harsin’s program, I believe Powell Gordon epitomizes that.

A big time player is on his way for Bryan Harsin and Auburn football.
