Auburn football has one of the most difficult schedules in 2021, but it could be getting more difficult in the coming years due to potential conference restructuring.

College football’s most elite conference could be adding two more teams to the roster very soon.  According to Chip Brown of 247Sports, both Oklahoma and Texas will join the SEC unless “unforeseen developments” occur.

Matt Galatzan of Fan Nation’s Longhorns Country reports that both the Longhorns and the Sooners may plan to wait until their current grant of rights agreement is up in 2025 before making the move, but it could also come sooner if they’re willing to lose out on Big 12 television revenue.

The additions to the conference could be announced as early as within a few weeks despite Texas A&M’s opposition to the move and Oklahoma State’s opposition to being left in the Big 12, per CBS’ Barrett Sallee. To be accepted into the conference for Oklahoma and Texas, they must receive a majority vote from the current members, all of whom are expected to vote ‘yes’ save for one (you can take a guess at which school that is.)

As if the news that Bryce Young is potentially making up to seven figures off NIL endorsements wasn’t enough to get SEC fans riled up, it’s safe to say that some are less than thrilled to welcome two new members to an already cutthroat conference.

The SEC prides itself on being the best, most intense conference in college football, and many fans think the Sooners and Longhorns are ill-prepared for what awaits them in the SEC. They’ll go from a typical lineup of teams like TCU, Kansas, and Baylor to matching up against the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Auburn football.

While it’s not a done deal yet, it sure looks like the Big 12 is crumbling and the SEC is on its way to becoming a superconference. In the near future, Auburn football could be facing Texas and Oklahoma regularly and may have to compete with the two teams even more intensely for recruits.
