Auburn football fans may need to prepare for even more interconference rivals after the arrival of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC. The jump from the Big 12’s two most valuable programs could just be the beginning, with a mass exodus of the top schools from the ACC and Big Ten potentially following suit.

There are rumblings that Ohio State, Michigan, Florida State, and Clemson may be the next SEC-bound schools, despite the former two universities occupying states that are nowhere near the southeast.

The Clemson case (and to a lesser degree, FSU’s) is one that seems more plausible than the two Midwestern rivals abandoning the Big Ten, but crazier things have happened.

The addition of Clemson would add a fourth team with the Tigers mascot to the SEC, and there’d be a dormant rivalry with Auburn football ready to resurrect. Auburn football is 2-4 against Clemson in the 21st century, though they have lost four straight since their last championship in 2010.

And while (Plains) Tiger fans may not be thrilled with the idea of adding another potential roadblock to the CFP, Rubbing the Rock’s Shawn Spencer is bullish on the idea of Clemson joining the SEC:

"Clemson joining the SEC mega conference would give the entire athletic department a stability unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. The SEC is going to draw major television revenue and the Tigers would likely make more than $30 million more in a single academic year based off that revenue alone. If the SEC- with its two major additions- has called, you at least have to listen to the pitch, don’t you?"

Spencer recognizes what being in the SEC could do for Clemson, and given their stay at the top of the college football totem pole the last decade, they’re no strangers to the conference. In fact, they’ve won their last five games since 2018 and have won 10 of their last 11 games overall against the SEC.

Count RTR among those itching to see Clemson step up to the highest weight class possible as the second team from the state of South Carolina to understand that “It just means more” in the SEC.
