Conference realignment is the hot topic here at FWE because the SEC seems hellbent on adding big-name opponents to the conference, and thus the calendar of Auburn football as well by proxy.

Texas and Oklahoma have made their way to the SEC already, getting all 14 program votes in a unanimous to bring America’s most competitive collegiate athletic conference to even greater heights. It seems as though more will be coming, though, considering the enormous revenue growth potential that exists in bringing even more rich Saturday traditions to the wealthiest conference in college football.

A successful southern school with the most potentially great new rivalries that could move the sport forward –with the likes of Alabama, Georgia, and Auburn football–as a new SEC member is Clemson of the ACC.

We’ve monitored our FanSided brethren’s responses and RTR would like the idea of adding Clemson to the SEC…if (and only if) FSU was involved as well.

Now, South Carolina’s Garnet and Cocky fansite has weighed in, and they endorse the idea of fellow SC state school Clemson in the SEC:

"Personally, I like the idea. The Gamecocks already play Clemson on a yearly basis. They regularly schedule other ACC foes in out-of-conference play, too. Should it come to fruition, these matchups would become more important in a race for a conference title. Some will say they don’t want the schedule to get any tougher, but this is the way that college football is moving. Big time games each and every week. It will inevitably shift further in this direction. Maybe these two leagues can get out in front of the change."

I got to hand to Jacob Elsey for welcoming the competition from Clemson. The Gamecocks are already in a tough spot playing them yearly, so what harm could it do to add to their SEC slate and opening up an easier non-conference matchup on the schedule.

2020 took the matchup away, but perhaps more realignment can solidify the battle of the Palmetto State as an even more intense in-state staple moving forward by making it an annual joust in the SEC East.
