Former Auburn football QB Joey Gatewood is on his way to his third school in as many years after announcing his intentions to transfer from Kentucky on Sunday.
Gatewood played his first two seasons on the Plains before making the inter-conference jump to Mark Stoops’ Wildcats in 2020.
The dual-threat signal-caller from Jacksonville will not get the chance to suit up in 2021, but he will be utilizing his COVID-19 extra year of eligibility in order to extend what some would consider to be an underwhelming career thus far after being ranked the #49 commit in the Class of 2018.
Once upon a time, Gatewood was the primary competition to Bo Nix. In light of today’s news, Tiger fans all over the net decided to pull up the receipts in defense of the oft-criticized Nix:
Obviously, the debate has been put to rest considering the inability for Gatewood to contribute for the Wildcats in 2020. He didn’t throw for a single score, but was picked off in his 35 attempts, completing less than half of them in the process.
Moving forward, he will lose a year on the field and will be behind the 8-bll a bit wherever he lands next. Even still, he “intends to compete and contribute to a Power Five football team,” according to Nick Roush of Kentucky Sports Radio.
Nix’s 2020 was far from picturesque, but his 2019 Iron Bowl performance solidified him for the man on the Plains…at least up until the early part of the upcoming campaign. He has two talented young gunslingers nipping at his heels now, and the Bryan Harsin era is defined by competition at each position.
This all to say: like Pepperidge Farms, Auburn football fans remember.
