What a weird, wild, and eventful offseason it has been for Auburn football.

Now less than three weeks until the opening kickoff during Labor Day weekend at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the Tigers are putting the finishing touches on their preseason camps as classes begin for the student-athletes.

Those finishing touches are of course dramatic as can be, because why not. 2020 couldn’t be a more unpredictable year, so the tone has been set for what should be a truly unconventional decade when it’s all said and done. Assuming the world doesn’t end first. No guarantees.

With the recent headwear-related happenings on the Plains in recent days, Fly War Eagle decided to rank the top memes of what has been a knee-slapper of an offseason so far:

Auburn football #3 offseason meme: Hat-gate

No recency bias will cloud our judgement. While Hat-gate is amusing on its surface, there is actually a dark undertone to this past week’s new meme.

What was a simple and, some would even say kind, gesture became the subject of scrutiny from beat reporters covering the Tiger beat. Head coach Bryan Harsin threw hats with the orange and blue ‘AU’ and was then accused of trying to coax goodwill out of the press for doing so.

Instead of seeing this as an opportunity to run a Twitter giveaway or simply tossing the hat in the trash, several days have been consumed by talking about a freakin’ hat during the final few months before the 27th head coach of the Tigers’ near 130-year history because someone felt the need to dig for a deeper meaning to why Harsin would do such a thing.
